During an online consultation , I asked my patient if she can hear wheezes, to which she said “Yes. When the lungs of Asthma sufferers start to get congested, the air traveling through the airways produce a sort-of-whistling sound which is called “Wheezes.” Wheezes is one of the hallmarks of an asthma attack. Doctors will be able to hear it from your back through the use of a stethoscope. However, for the person suffering from asthma, they can often hear it themselves even without a stethoscope. You can click on this video to listen to what a wheeze or wheezing sounds like.
Aside from wheezing, here are some other sounds that you may commonly hear with asthma:
- Chronic Cough, which often worsens at night or early morning – The sound of chronic cough can be a sign that your airways are inflamed. You can hear this even without a stethoscope.
- Gasping Sound – Gasping sounds can be accompanied by a feeling of tightness as the airways constrict. This is produced when a person has difficulty of breathing. You can hear this even without a stethoscope.
- Reduced Airway Sound – As asthma progresses less air gets to enter the airways and this can lessen the sound of the air entering the lungs. This is noticeable by using a stethoscope, and can most easily be recognized by comparing the sounds of your left and right lungs. If one lung sounds louder that the other, then chances are, there is reduced airway sound.
While recognizing these sounds is crucial, relying solely on medications to manage asthma can lead to complications and side effects. If you would like to read more about common side effects of asthma here.
